The very special terroir at the start of the Atacama Desert (the driest in the world) and very close to the sea (about 14 kilometers), and on the bed of the Huasco River, produces wines with the same charged character. Take this chardonnay, for example. A blend of two vineyards, one with alluvial soils and the other with saline soils as white as chalk. The grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks, and the wine was aged in a 2,000-liter foudre and two 1,000-liter concrete eggs. The result is a wine that may be eccentric, but it's also highly drinkable. Unlike many of the so-called "natural" wines, where the clarity of their appearance, aromas, or flavors is less important than their eccentricity factor–the intellectual pleasure of trying something different–in this case, it has all that as well as flavors of ripe white fruits in a juicy wine that's also delicious to drink."
